Bread is available from all supermarkets, with the Western ones stocking more nutritious, wholegrain varieties. However,  even the supposed deluxe brands a can be a little dry and tasteless, so Mango Menus recommend Marks and Spencer (Queens Road East, Taikoo Shing and many other locations) for everyday bread.  Here you can buy fresh baguettes, bagels, patisseries, multiseed loaves of bread, rolls for children's lunches as well as part baked ciabattas and croissants. And when the boat really needs pushing out, there is only one place:  Joel Robuchon...

Joel Robuchon's Salon de Thé  - a must if you want to serve decent croissants for a brunch or bread at a dinner party. Nothing beats the multi Michelin star winner's selection in his café in the Landmark, Queens Road East (just past Diane Von Furstenberg) or the newly opened Salon de Thé in the  IFC.

Mango Menus also loves:

Tai Tai Pie Pies - wonderful selection of artisanal homemade sweet and savoury pies with buttery crumbly pastry. Look out for the All American Apple Pie, Silky Sweet Potato Pie, Pumpkin and Spice Pie, the Spiked (with dark Rum) Pumpkin and Spice Pies as well as the Wholly Heavens Pecan and Wholly Heavens Chocolate Sin Pecan Pies. From $400 for a 9.5” pie and the option for bite size portions. Order online for delivery 2 days later, visit Great Food Hall in the basement of Pacific Place, Admiralty or add onto your order at Golden Goose Gourmet.

Make your own!

Make your own bread, either with your own bare hands, or in a breadmaker. You can buy all the flours and dried yeast you need in the supermarkets, including the wonderful Duchy's Original brand from the UK, and some bread mixes. These are even cheaper on iherb and you can view all their bread mixes here.

Baking Supplies

If I have a child's birthday party to prepare for, I always head to Twinsco, 1/F, 137 Johnston Road who stock a vast array of very cheap baking supplies including dairy (butter, cream, cream cheese), Valhrona chocolate (favoured by no less than my idol, Heston Blumenthal), party bags, cupcake cases, jelly moulds and much more. Opens at midday.

There is also I Love Cake, in Wan Chai. Both of these are written about in this link:
