All the HK supermarkets sell fruit and vegetables, with the Western ones stocking a larger variety of imported but more expensive produce. The wet markets sell cheaper vegetables, most of which come from China and surrounding regions, according to the season.

For farmers' markets, organic, imported and delivery services, Mango Menus recommends the following:

Organic markets: try the busy organic wet market on Wednesday afternoons at the Star Ferry terminal on the HK island side, 12-6pm or Sundays 11-5pm. The wet market in Sai Ying Pung also sells organic vegetables at a stall called 'A Taos Vegetables Organic Corner', S18-19, Sai Ying Pun Market, 45 Centre Street, Sai Ying Pun. They also deliver and you can download the A Taos order form here.

Farmers' markets: Island East Markets have stalls from organic farms in the New Territories, often priced slightly cheaper than ordering online. Info can be found at hkmarkets.org or on the Island East Markets Facebook page.

Fruit & Veg delivery: there are many farms who deliver to Hong Kong from Australasia. Some are based in the New Territories with others in China, Thailand, Tasmania and New Zealand. While you can often select the fruit and vegetables you want, it’s cheaper to opt for their seasonal basket Mango Menus' favourites are:

Eat Fresh- vegetables and fruit from several organic farms in the New Territories. Read our Eat FRESH review.

Homegrown Foods - "premium clean" vegetables from farms in the New Territories. Online delivery service or you can visit their Zen Farm to pick your own. We went last October and you can read our review here...

Ecofarm- vegetables from an organic farm in Jiangxi, China. Read 0ur review here.

Green Little Frog - fruit & veg from Thailand. Expect more exotic fruits from this one compared to others. Read our Green Little Frog review.

The Freshgrower - fruit & vegetables flown in weekly from NZ. While not organic, they are grown in volcanic soil with artesian water and use compound fertilizers which in comparison to organic fertilizers such as animal manures, eliminate the chances of bacterial contaminations (e.g. Salmonella from poultry manure). This one has a particularly good selection of greens. Read our review of the Fresh Grower.

Visit their stores at G/F. 223 Queen’s Road East. Wan Chai or G/F, No.41A Belcher’s Street. H.K on a Mon or Thurs to get 20% off.

Tasmania Fresh, like the Fresh Grower, is not organic but prides itself on its rich volcanic soil, unpolluted air and minimal use of chemicals. Delivery to HK is within 48 hours of having been picked. Read our review of Tasmania Fresh.

Magic Season Organics sources organic veggies locally for delivery and is one of the cheaper options around.

You can sign up for weekly deliveries over a course of months or longer to get a discount, but they will also let you trial them by just paying for one basket. This is normally around $350 and claims to last a family about a week, but this is ambitious in our opinion, and besides,  the goods tend to go off before then. You need to act quickly! Either eat it, freeze it or cook then freeze. If you are stuck for ideas, email Mango Menus for suggestions!

We have yet to try this, but apparently there is an Aussie guy who turns up at 4 Mount Davis Road every Saturday between 4pm and 4.15pm (also not always around bank holidays) and sells Aussie organic vegetables from his truck. The same truck is at High West, 142 Pokfulam road between 7.30pm and 8pm on a Wednesday and Saturday evening.

VISIT THE FARMS!

There are several farm that you can visit to pick your own. We have visited and written reviews of  Zen Organic Farm and Rainbow Strawberry Farm. Kadoorie Farm is another option for a day out but without the PYO facility.

ONE STOP SHOPS!

South Stream Seafoods as well as stocking meat, fish and grocery items, also sells Aussie organic and non-organic fruit and veg.

Meatmarket while specialising in meat and fish, also supply fruit & vegetables from Green Little Frog in Thailand.

Also, if shopping online at the Spice Store (Indian and Pakistani grocery store), they too stock fresh vegetables.

If you are interested in the wet market's wares, or have foodie guests in town, Mango Menus thoroughly recommends booking a guided tour with Mrs Vivian Wong, a Cantonese tutor with fluent English. She specialises in taking her students out of the classroom into the real Hong Kong and we spent a fascinating hour with her in Causeway Bay wet market learning about the uses for different vegetables, dried goods and much more.
